Moving during the summer heat is not something that many people look forward to. However, Americans find summers the best time to make a move. Kids are out of school and there is generally time during the summer to make a move. The problem is the summer is hot and that can affect your move. Here are some tips to try to make it manageable.
Plan the Move
Plan 4 to 6 weeks in advance of your move date. Ask yourself how your going to move? Professional Movers or do-it-yourself. If you use professional movers it will be less of a burden, but much more expensive. If your a do-it-yourselfer, than it's going to be renting a truck or use portable storage containers to make the move. Determine this ahead of time which method so you know what you'll need to do prepare.
Professional Movers
Using movers will be the easiest way to prepare. Call several movers to come out and quote your move and ask them what you need to do to be ready. Typically they will have a list of things to prepare. Follow their list and be prepared when they arrive. They can figure out how to beat the heat instead of you.
Rent a Truck
For those that are on a tight budget, renting a truck is going to be the least expensive way to move, but is going to be the hardest on yourself. In order to minimize the cost of the truck, you will need to minimize the days that you rent it. Planning a day move takes several days to weeks of getting ready. You will need to have everything packed and ready when the truck arrives. In addition, you will need able bodies ready to load and pack items in the truck.
Beating the Heat
The night before you do your move it is important to get hydrated. Drink lost of water and get a good night sleep. Try not to stay up late packing....that's a hard one to avoid. Eat a good breakfast and continue to drink water even if your not thirsty. Start early to beat the hottest part of the day. Load the heaviest items first and pack the smaller items in between the large items to avoid the load shifting. This is a good job for someone that can't do the heavy lifting. Take breaks often
Cool down with ice towels or a hose
Load in a shady place or load early before the heat of the sun comes out
Wear light colored clothes and change clothes often
If you feel dizzy or light headed, stop and find a cool place to rest
