January 2010 Archives

Many of our customers at UNITS ask how to load their UNIT (mobile storage container).  There are many things to consider when loading: weight of item, durability of belongings, and need of access.  Here are my favorite loading tips:

·         Place cardboard or plastic sheeting on the floor of your storage UNIT to help protect your valuables.

·         Create "walls" using box mattresses every few feet to keep items from falling.

·         Load heavy appliances on the floor against the front wall of your UNIT.  Continue loading heavier items on the floor evenly distributing the weight throughout the UNIT.  Remember, load up to 6,000 pounds in a 12 foot UNIT and up to 8,000 pounds in a 16 foot UNIT.

·         Use the E-Strap system to secure heavy items to the UNIT wall.

·         Place lighter items on top of heavier items.  Properly secure them with the E-Straps.

·         Long pieces (like sofas) can be stood on end.  This greatly reduces their "footprint".

·         Be generous with blankets and padding.  Use bagged pillows and furniture cushions to fill gaps.

·         Load the items you will need (unless heavy) first at the back (by door) of the UNIT.

·         Do not load any item that may be flammable (gasoline, kerosene, fireworks, etc)

·         Load some everyday, so you are not overwhelmed with loading all in one day.

I hope these tips help when loading your UNITS mobile storage container.  Look at previous logs for packing tips.  Remember UNITS of Milwaukee is only a phone call away (414-476-8648) when you need some advice.   We deliver our mobile storage containers as far south as Kenosha and Racine counties.

The previous blog about Moving and Packing Tips was so popular that the subject deserves a squeal.   Here are a few more of my favorite packing tips:

·         Use old towels and blankets between boxes and furniture to minimize shifting when in transit.

·         Label each box with the room where the box will be unpacked.  This makes unpacking easier.

·         Wrap pictures in bubble wrap for added security.

·         Place packed boxed in order they will be unloaded.  This way unloading will take less time and you will have the essentials items (i.e. beds, bath towels) right away when you move.

·         Use over sized boxes for pillows, bedding and lamp shades.

·         Create a list for each box and its contents.  This will help when you need to find an item.

·         Wrap items with paper to reduce scratching.

·         Pack some everyday, so you are not overwhelmed with packing all in one day.

I hope these tips help when packing for your move.  Remember UNITS of Milwaukee is only a phone call away (414-476-8648) when you need some packing and moving advice.   We also sell packing supplies (boxes, bubble wrap, etc) and  rent moving blankets.  Happy packing!
